My Mexican Style

Full disclosure – I hate having my picture taken.  So much so, that when my husband & I got married, we opted for candid style photography only.  I knew that was the only way that I could stand having my picture taken and have there be any chance that I would look relaxed in the final product.

On our recent trip to Mexico, I knew that I had to take the opportunity to take some pictures for the blog as well as getting some shots taken with my mother.  So to kill those two birds with one stone, we decided to have a Dream Art Photography session.  I ended up loving the results, so I thought I would share some of my favourite outfits with you here.

Here I am getting photobombed by my adorable daughter just outside our building.  Chiara was so entranced by those lanterns, we had to drag her away.  I’m wearing this City Chic Grecian maxi dress, which was a bit of a stretch for me.  I don’t normally wear this colour of bright orange, but it just felt right in Mexico (take note, don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone!).  The bag is a Le Pliage tote by Mary Katrantzou for Longchamp  and it really came in handy.  I used it as my carry-on, my beach bag and my shopping bag.  I’ve had it for a couple of years now and it was a limited edition, but Longchamp often does designer colabs, so keep your eyes open for the next batch.

I really got a lot of use out of this coverup from ASOS.  I’m wearing it here over a black tank and cropped leggings and I also used it as a bathing suit cover up (check it out on my Instagram feed).  Love pieces that do double duty!  To add to the tribal/Aztec feel, I wore my Pamela Love Tribal Spike Necklace (smaller version found here).  This was a bit of an investment piece, but I’ve had it for years and I still love it.  I’m also wearing my trusty Eric Javits Squishee Fedora.  This hat has really taken a beating over the years, but it still looks great!  In fact, I left it in the bottom of the travel stroller when I collapsed it and it got totally squished.  It truly lives up to its name.

This gorgeous kaftan is one of my most prized pieces by the incomparable Anna Scholz.  It is from the last season at my shop, Lola & Gigi, and holds a bit of a special place in my heart (I wore it to our goodbye party, sniff).  I love the drama of the piece – the fabric, the mirror circles, the colours, everything!  It doesn’t need much accessorizing, so I’m just wearing a fabulous statement ring from local Puerto Vallarta designer Cassandra Shaw.

So there it is, my Mexican style!  I hope you enjoyed coming along on this trip with us (virtually, anyway).  Do you tailor your style to your vacation location? Do tell!

  4. Love these shots! You look beautiful and the entire shoot made me want to visit Mexico!

You should wear orange more often, it’s definitely your colour :)

When I went on my cruise I spent hours coming up with day-to-evening cruise wear combinations (the shorts that could go from casual at the beach with flipflops to nightclubbing on the ship with some sassy heels). So sad I’ll need to wait a few more months to wear all those again in Toronto.

Thanks for bringing some warmth to this chilly end of winter day!

The red-orange dress: you look like a Grecian goddess! For someone who does not like her photo taken (something most of us can identify with so well), you come across as cool and confident – just lovely! And your styling… so chic and yet comfortable, and also practical (love double-duty pieces!). Mexico clearly brings out the best in you!
